D-profile granules permit a better distribution of gas flow throughout the entire absorbent bed. Because the D shape decreases the absorbents tendency to pack or clump, it provides greater contact (the entire granules capacity can be utilized) between the patients exhaled gas and the absorbent. Since it is the intent of the absorbent to remove all the CO2 in the patient exhaled gases, the result is a more effective CO2 absorption capacity.
